Your Space Or Mine

Ben Eine

Our Your Space Or Mine series is more important to us than ever. In the coming weeks, we’ll be working with a new series of artists to inspire the public in different ways, whether that’s through positivity or playful humour.

After two months of our lives slowing down, we’re all finding creative ways to enjoy our new routines and find space to get inspired. To help drive your inspiration, the BUILDHOLLYWOOD family of JACK, JACK ARTS and DIABOLICAL have collaborated with famous street artist Ben Eine to bring his tongue-in-cheek messages to our streets.

Born in London, Eine is one of the most successful letterform artists in the world and is regarded as a pioneer in the exploration of contemporary typography art. Originally a graffiti writer, Eine started his career over 30 years ago, leaving his first tag all over London before developing his distinct typographic style. Eine began painting huge, bright and colourful letters on shutters all over East London that caught the public’s attention and were seminal in the rise of street art’s popularity. Ben designed his most impressive work to date in 2018, a mural simply reading “CREATE”. The piece, which is the largest street art in the world, took up 17500 feet in his stomping ground of East London and could be seen from space. London based but his works are celebrated worldwide – from innumerous streets, to high end boutiques and even the White House.

His latest work features two designs with different messages: “another fine mess” and “I’m so happy, very very happy”. The imposing words, in bright, bold type set against a black background, are designed both to disrupt and inspire, encouraging people to take notice. He chose these sayings, one of which is a reference to Laurel and Hardy, deliberately to connect with the British public. According to Ben, “Both the sayings are a play on British humour and sarcasm. The British public will come out of this with more unity and with a clearer view on what is important.”

For the collaboration, Eine, who in the past worked with Banksy, will be returning to his authentic street art roots to hand-paint a mural in East London. Keen to take his playful humour to the public, Eine’s creative studio OurTypes has produced bespoke artwork that will also appear on our posters sites in 10 cities across the UK.

Speaking to us recently, Ben called his work a “golden opportunity to spread some sarcasm,” which he hopes will “tickle the English sense of humour”. After 30 years working with typography, Ben’s favourite medium is still the streets he calls home. When asked why he chose this way to convey his message, he told us, “exhibiting your art on the street is the purest way to get your message out. You don’t have to pay to see it, you don’t have to be elite to see it. It breaks down every social and economic barrier.” Democratising art is more important than ever. After this crisis is over, he wants us to make sure we never go back to normal: “We need to come together and make better choices,” he emphasises.

Alongside Eine, we’ll be handing over our poster sites to 10 other artists who will be taking over their local area with messages of positivity and perseverance: Yinka Ilori in London, Super Freak in Birmingham, Lois O’Hara in Brighton, Holy Moly in Bristol, #medicineonthewalls in Bristol, Suzanne Carpenter (Patternistas) in Cardiff, Martin Baillie in Edinburgh, Social Recluse in Glasgow, Micah Purnell in Manchester and Beth Woollvin in Sheffield. As we move through our lives, often not looking up at our surroundings, we hope our Your Space Or Mine project will offer some playful humour or positive messages of hope and inspiration, encouraging us to take a closer look at the world around us.
